VJing is a type of performance that combines the visual possibilities of video art and filmmaking with the improvisational pleasures of jazz and free style DJing. 'Jockeying' is a behavior, role, and activity that facilitate a radically new kind of post-cinematic experience. This experience can only be articulated in relation to traditional film syntax. In doing some, the similarities and differences between this new type of cinema and the older one flesh out new possibilities for producers of the moving image, the audience, and the spaces in which cinema can not only be seen, but happen as events. Live visuals now accompany DJs, bands, raves, and dance recitals, and are starting to take center stage in art galleries as main attractions on their own. Until recently, only deep-pocketed artists could participate, but with prices dropping dramatically on the major components, anyone with an imagination, a laptop, a DV cam and a projector, can join in. Welcome to the revolution.
